6 Things Companies Can't Do Without a Recruiter

Recruiters can help companies in many ways.


Companies often debate whether it's more cost-effective to work with a recruiter or to handle their hiring needs completely in-house. Social media, internet newsletters and employee referral programs have made it easier and less time consuming to build talent networks, and larger companies may have hiring managers that work to fill open positions.

No matter how streamlined the process becomes, however, there are still some things companies can't do effectively without a recruiter's help. In IT hiring particularly, it makes sense to use the expertise of a recruiter to accomplish the following hiring tasks.

1. Find the candidates who aren't currently looking.

Most of the best candidates for an open IT position aren't actively looking for a new job, even if they are willing to make a move or consider taking a different job. Recruiters work with both companies hiring workers and job seekers who want to get hired. Because of their direct communication with potential candidates, recruiters can give them inside information that will help them do well during the interview process as well as coach them on how to present themselves better, what language to use in the interview, and even how to format their resume to get through the screening process.

3. Process a large volume of resumes quickly.

Recruiters use software programs to screen resumes and narrow down the pool of qualified applicants from hundreds to a few. Most companies don't have access to this software and need to review resumes and applications by hand. Even if they do have some kind of electronic screening process, recruiters are much more skilled at screening resumes both quickly and effectively.


It may even save companies money to pay a recruiter.


4. Make the hiring process their top priority.

Most hiring managers have many other job duties, including supervising employees, working on projects in their department, and reporting to company executives. Recruiters, on the other hand, have filling open positions as their top priority and can dedicate themselves to finding the best candidates to interview and hire.

5. Stay in touch with almost-hires.

Candidates who don't get the position but make it to the final round of the decision process may still be quality hires for future positions. Recruiters can continue to network with and track these candidates in case positions become open in the future that they may be qualified for. This kind of networking and tracking can make the process of filling positions faster and easier as time goes on.

6. Save money on hiring.

Yes, recruiters get paid for filling open positions, but companies often save money using a recruiter compared to paying their salaried employees for the many hours it takes to build talent networks and screen resumes. Hiring quality employees is important to a company's overall performance. In one sense, a company is only as good as its employees. Using a recruiting professional who can deliver the best possible employees is money well spent.
